The vast majority of homes that are for sale are "listed" on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) with an established dollar amount that the seller has already agreed to pay any licensed real estate agent who finds the buyer that purchases their home.  This payment is called the selling office commission.  This dollar amount is paid out of the proceeds that the seller receives from the sale of the home.
